Team Liberty is looking for youth athletes in the age category of 13-15 and in the junior
 category of 16-19.

The objective of Team Liberty is to help grow the sport of triathlon with the youth and junior age groups.  We want to take these age groups and provide them with opportunities to learn and excel in the sport of triathlon.
We want to assist these young athletes in setting and achieving goals to reach their full potential in the sport of triathlon.

The Team Liberty Triathlon Development Team has two components:  a Developmental Elite Squad and an Open Squad.  The Developmental Elite Squad supports athletes with a high likelihood for success at the
national level in triathlons.  The Open Squad supports youth and junior athletes who wish to participate in the sport of triathlon, partake in
the camaraderie of being a member of the team, and seek to develop their skills.  The athletes will be tested throughout the season to determine their position on the team.  This does not mean that a certain athlete will be given more attention than another.

USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Region -- College Scholarship Program

The USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Region (USAT-MA) supports various programs that enhance the participation in multi-sports events in the seven-state region and the District of Columbia.  One of those activities is the College Scholarship Program.
[1]  The goal of the Program is to:

Support young adults at colleges and universities in the Region so that they can fully develop their intellectual
talents while simultaneously develop their physical abilities through training and participation in multi-sport
events at both the team and individual levels.

The Program includes three annual cash scholarship awards resulting from team competition at the annual USAT-MA Collegiate Championship[2]

  • $750 will be awarded to the first female finisher and $250 to the second finisher who is a USAT member
on an official college team ranked in the event and located in the region
  • $750 will be awarded to the first male finisher and $250 to the second finisher who is a USAT member
on an official college team ranked in the event and located in the region
  • $250 will be awarded at random to another finisher who is a USAT member on an official college team
ranked in the event and located in the region
    [3]

The awards will be presented immediately after the event by either a representative of the event’s race  management team or by a representative from the USAT-MA Board of Directors.
It will be the sole responsibility of the recipients who may be on an NCAA (or other) athletic scholarship  to know and conform to the NCAA rules pertaining to receiving gifts and awards.
[4]

[1] On February 15, 2006, the USAT-MA Board of Directors voted unanimously to institute the Program,  including financial support - by providing annual scholarship awards, and logistics support - by appointing  a USAT-MA Collegiate Championship Committee Chairperson.

[2] When not specified, rules governing this competition will be the USAT Collegiate Championship rules. This includes individual and team eligibility, scoring, and others.

[3] The process of designing and conducting the random and unbiased selection will be mutually agreed  upon before the event by both the Race Director of the event and the USAT-MA Collegiate Championship Committee Chairperson.

[4] The USAT-MA will work with any recipient who cannot directly accept an award.  This may include  providing and accepting documentation that maximizes the recipient’s benefits under NCAA (or other)  guidelines.

8/12/07:

The Steelman triathlon took place on August 12th  at Lake Nockamixon in Qaukertown, PA.  This race was chosen to be the Mid-Atlantic Junior Championship race for 2007.  The junior championship race was contested with the 16-19 age groups.
There were a total of 34 athletes competing under the age of 19 which I believe is one of the largest fields
competing at the Mid-Atlantic junior championship race.  These athletes are truly the future of this sport.

In the junior race for the males the race was dominated by James Mulski from Moorestown, NJ who was
also the overall winner in the sprint race with the 9th fastest swim, 6th fastest bike split and the 3rd fastest
run split for a time of 1:07.27.  Second place for the championship race went to Sean McNulty from
West Windsor, NJ (1:09.28) with third going to Nicholas Halkowski from Kennet Square, PA (1:15.23).

The female race was also dominated by Hannah Vernon from Morgantown, WV who was the second female
and 18th overall in the sprint race.  Her splits of 12:47 for the swim, 40.38 for the bike and 22.30 for the run
where good enough for a 1:17.09 winning time.  Second place in the championship race went to
Courtney Gregor from Chalfont, PA (1:24.34) with third place going to Kara Geiger from Zionsville, PA (1:25.30).

Congratulations to all juniors and under 15 year olds that competed in this race

7/19/07:

The USAT Youth and Junior Elite Cup race took place in Pittsburgh, PA on July 14th.  This race was a draft
legal, multi lap race consisting of a 500m swim, 10k bike and a 2.5k run for the youth (ages13-15) and
 a 800m swim, 20k bike and a 5k run for the juniors (ages 16-19).

In the youth male and female division the races were dominated by the Multisport Madness kid’s team
from Illinois with Jennifer Howland winning in a time of 38:17 and Ben Kanute winning in a time of 34:35.

In the junior male division Andrew Yoder from the Mid-Atlantic region and Willy Pickhardt from Arkansas,
who is on the junior national team, broke away from the main pack on the bike.  Willy went on to win the
race with a time of 59:24.  Andrew was passed by Duncan Hoge from North Carolina to earn the top spot
for the Mid-Atlantic region finishing 3rd with a time of 1:00:54 and Andrew crossing the line in 4th with a time
of 1:01:02.  Other Mid-Atlantic Region finishers were, Brian Duffy from PA finishing 7th and James Burns
 finishing 10th.

The junior female race was dominated by Kate Ross from Pennsylvania taking the overall spot
with a time of 1:06:57 earning a spot for the World Championships in Germany.
Kate raced the
perfect race getting out of the water with the lead pack and not working more than she needed to on the
bike to set her up for her strongest leg, the run.  Kate is in perfect form leading up to the Junior National
Champs in August.  It was great to see Kate win as this race was the 3rd largest junior race ever in the
country and to win in her home state.

Other junior female finishers from the Mid-Atlantic region were, Allison Linnell from New Jersey finishing
12th and Stephanie Stambaugh also from New Jersey finishing 14th.

Congratulations to our regional participants and their outstanding performances!

2008 Events:

The USAT Mid-Atlantic Junior Development Series consists of six independently produced, owned, and operated, short-course triathlons held in the USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic region.

There will be 2 age categories for each race.  Athletes with the ages of 16 and 17 and athletes with the ages of 18 and 19 (as of December 31, 2007) are eligible to participate in the Junior Development Series. An overall award will be given to each male and female in these 2 categories in all six races.

The purpose of the series is to encourage participation in the sport of triathlon by junior athletes at the age-appropriate distance and in high quality events.

The series is also intended to facilitate USAT talent identification and recruitment within the Mid-Atlantic Region as part of USAT’s national athlete development program.

Overall 2008 Season Scoring and Awards

All athletes participating in the 2007 USAT-MA Junior Development Series will earn a series ranking based on their best three of four results.  Standings will be posted on the USAT-MA website at www.usat-ma.org

Points will be awarded to Eligible Athletes finishing in 1st through 20th place in the male and female, 13-15 and 16-19 year old divisions of each race.

The overall male and female 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place series champions will be recognized with awards at USAT Mid-Atlantic region’s annual meeting to be held in the winter of 2008.

Registration

Athletes must register for each race according to each race’s existing fees and requirements.

No additional registration is required to be ranked in the series standings.

Series events are independently owned and operated by the different race organizers.  Event race directors often limit the number of participants in their events for safety and logistics reasons.  Participation in any one race in this series DOES NOT guaranty entry into subsequent races.  It is in the athlete's best interest to register in advance for ALL races in which they plan to participate.  We have selected only the highest-quality events for this series and many of them will sell out early … so please do not ask someone to “pull strings" to get you into a series race ....  no exceptions will be made.

USAT Rules
Athletes will compete according to standard USAT
age group, non-drafting rules.

Series participants will start according to the race director’s existing plans for wave starts, bike racking, etc.

Athlete Bicycles
USAT considers the optimal bicycle set-up for junior athletes to be a traditional "road" bicycle with drop-style handlebars - as opposed to a "tri" bike with aero bars.  There are two main justifications for this philosophy.  First, junior athletes need to develop sound bike handling skills before focusing on riding extended periods in the aero position.  The "road" position, with hands on the brake hoods or in the drops with fingertips on the brake levers, is the safest riding position for young athletes.

Second, junior athletes may also want to participate in ITU-style junior triathlons (including Junior National Championships) or attend a junior development camp.  Both events require a road bike with drop bars to participate.  Therefore, we believe that setting a junior triathlete up on a road bike FIRST is the safest and most cost-effective way to introduce a young athlete to the sport of triathlon.

Athletes should make every effort to conform to the junior bike set-up described above; however, all bikes that are "legal" according to USAT age-group competition rules will be allowed.  This will allow consistency of enforcement at all series events by USAT certified officials.

USAT Membership

All series races are sanctioned by USA Triathlon.  In order to participate in a series race, athletes will need to purchase either an Annual Membership in USA Triathlon or a One-Day License for each event in which the athlete participates.  Complete information on Annual Membership can be found at www.usatriathlon.org
